The Calbayog Airport formally inaugurated its newly constructed passenger terminal building on May 5, 2021.
Calbayog City Mayor Diego Rivera led the entourage in welcoming its guest of honor Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade together with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director-General Jim Sydiongco.
The event was started with a thanksgiving mass, attended by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Sec. Michael Diño, Samar 1st District Representative and Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Edgar Mary S. Sarmiento, Samar Governor Michael Reynolds Tan, and Samar Vice-Governor Angelica Gomez-Teodoro.
Mayor Rivera believes that the resumption of the Calbayog Airport’s operations will play a major role in the resumption of tourism and boosting the fast-growing economy of Calbayog City.
The old 76-passenger capacity terminal can now accommodate 450 passengers and is expected to serve more flights in the near future.
Despite the pandemic brought about by COVID-19, the renovations to the Calbayog Airport pushed through under the “BUILD, BUILD, BUILD” infrastructure program of the Duterte administration and is now ready to serve as the new gateway to the Eastern Visayas region, as a complementary alternate to the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport located in Tacloban City.
