The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Office VIII awarded the Local Government of Calbayog City for its Outstanding Ecological Solid Waste Management Initiatives (Noteworthy Activities leading to a Clean 7 Sustainable Calbayog River) last July 20, 2021 during the 2021 Summit and Recognition of Local Government Units with Outstanding Practices on SWM held at The Oriental Hotel in Palo, Leyte.

This award comes from the initiative and hard work of our City Solid Waste Management Office headed by Engr. Reynaldo Gonzaga, who have been instrumental in implementing significant changes and improvements to the city’s clean-up projects and various waste management processes.

This is not the first time the city of Calbayog has been recognized for maintaining the cleanliness of the Calbayog River. In 2019, the Calbayog River was awarded as 2nd place for the first ever DENR R.I.V.E.Rs (Recognizing Individuals/Institutions Towards Vibrant and Enhanced Rivers) for Life Award, second only to Lamut River in the Ifugao Province. This was during the 32nd anniversary celebration of the DENR held in Quezon City on June 14, 2019. Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu explained that the awards were meant to raise public awareness on the need to protect and conserve the country’s rivers as the lifeblood of the earth.

The conservation and sustainability of the city’s natural resources remain a priority for the administration of Mayor Diego P. Rivera. The LGU is committed to support interventions and initiatives from our dedicated men and women from the CSWMO, CENRO (City Environment and Natural Resources Office) and other agencies, to continue working hand in hand in creating an environmentally-friendly development plan for the city.
